INFORMING and CONSULTING

Whatever facilities and services are provided, people need to be told about them. Thought needs to be given to how it is best to tell people with different impairments. Should you use printed information, audio tapes, braille printing or even word of mouth. The best answer is all of these and more.

This section gives some general information. After preparing the initial plan for informing disabled people, a next step could be to contact the local groups representing people with physical, visual and hearing impairments and consulting with them on your plan. They will have extra ideas of how to present the information and how to get it to disabled people.



CONSULTATIONS

You also need to consider the means of communication when consulting with disabled people.

For people with visual impairments, some may be able to see presentation material but it will be necessary to describe what is being shown for those who cannot. There is no need to avoid words which are in common use, such as "see" or "look".

For people with hearing impairments, check what will be appropriate for them beforehand. A British Sign Language interpreter may be the most appropriate for some groups. An induction loop will help people who have a hearing aid with a "T" setting. Printed material handed out before the presentation will help someone follow what is going on.
